I pretended to be asleep when she left. I knew it was coming, but I didnât need to let her know I was watching. Something about it felt powerless to me, and there was no way in hell Iâd let Bella think I was powerless.
The truth was that I didnât want her to go. I think she knew that deep down, but neither one of us would have acknowledged, especially given that little speech Iâd made back in Zachâs neighborhood, ensuring Bella that I knew this was all about sex and only sex.
Separate our friendship from the sex, I scoffed inwardly. Iâd said it to her knowing full well that I wouldn't be able to do it. Not for long, at least. But in all honestly, Iâd been reaching for whatever hold I could find to wrap my fingers around and keep Bella in my life. No matter how shaky the grip I had on her was right then, it was way better than the alternative.
Having sex had changed everything, and we both knew that, whether or not we truly wanted to admit it. Any dreams Bella had maintained about keeping our friendship the same once she jetted off to New York had evaporated, much like the facade of indifference she kept putting up toward me.
She might act as if she believed we could be cross country best friends turned ex-lovers, but I knew for a fact that would never work. Stuff like that was the fantasy of romance novels, not real life.
And all of that is why I pretended to be asleep as she slipped out of my big bed, pulled her dress on over her head, grabbed her shoes, and padded out of the condo. A tiny sliver of light from the hallway danced across my couch as she opened and closed the door, and I watched it from my bed.
Losing the light felt like losing Bella, in a way. I hated the feeling of her slipping out of my bed and leaving my home. I didnât just want to have sex with her. I wanted to actually sleep next to her, to wake up in the middle of the night because my arm had fallen asleep from the weight of her head and have to gently maneuver it out from under those pretty dirty blonde waves. To pull her back to bed when she woke up at six a.m., claiming it was time for her morning workout before she headed into the office, early as usual. To sip coffee on the balcony and share smiles and laughs while we watched the hustle and bustle of the street below.
I wanted all of that. And all I had was a sliver of yellow light that disappeared as soon as the door closed behind her.
I rolled over, sighing aloud, once I was alone again. I pulled up the silky soft sheets, covering my shirtless form with them. I no longer needed to entice Bella with my abs, and the air was a little chilly.
